The 115th anniversary of energy provider E-Werk Franz was celebrated on 29 June 2018 together with the official opening of the hydropower plant. The new power plant with its fish ladder was built in 2017 and put into service in January 2018. In order for fish to pass freely through the nearly 100 year old weir in Gratwein, Sappi Gratkorn installed a fish ladder and E-Werk Franz constructed the residual water canal required for it to serve its purpose. The energy from this residual water canal is now being used sustainably. The power plant features a Kaplan turbine made by Geppert and generates power for 2,500 households, helping to conserve around 3,100 tonnes of CO2 a year.
